On January 7th, the 75th annual Golden Globe Awards premiered. The celebration of television and film was an eventful night, with a diverse set of films and television shows winning awards. Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri took home the Globe for Best Drama Motion Picture, while The Handmaid’s Tale won Best Drama TV Series. Oprah Winfrey arguably received the most prominent award of the night. The Cecil B. deMille Award was given to her for “outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment.” Oprah delivered an emotional speech commemorating many African-American icons, including Sidney Poitier, Rosa Parks, and Recy Taylor. She later went on to address the #MeToo campaign, aimed to show the widespread effect of sexual assault, and the connected “Time’s Up” movement.

Numerous men and women showed their support for these movements by wearing all black to the event or specially made “Time’s Up” pins. When asked about the night, Emory Sigmund ‘20 said , “I think the black dresses and the #MeToo campaign were such an incredible idea with all the recent sexual harassment being discovered on the news…I think [women] watching the Golden Globes, after seeing their favorite celebrities stand up for themselves by participating in the #MeToo campaign, would be compelled to want to stand up for themselves as well.” As Emory stated, celebrities clearly have a big influence and did a great job using it at the awards.

This year’s Golden Globes was one of the first high-profile events after the many seuxal assault allegations of Hollywood figures, including past award winner Harvey Weinstein. Andrew Herbster ‘22 commented on the absence of these actors: “I felt that the men who used to go to the Golden Globes deserved what they got, and it puts out a really good message to them about alienation of sexual assaulters.”

From Oprah’s speech, which kick-started speculation about a presidential run in 2020, to the spotlight on women in Hollywood, this year’s Golden Globes made waves across multiple industries. As the beginning to the awards season, it will have paved the way for 2018’s upcoming slate of award shows.
