Girls run during preseason practice.

Volleyball
Last Year: 20-9
Playoff Result: 2nd in Districts

“Our goals for the season are to have a lot of fun!” says Michaela Bach ‘18. “Last season we finally beat MICDS for the first time in a while, so we are hoping to beat them again. We have a group of girls, who no matter what, leave everything they have on the court. We support each other and push each other to be better players. We might have a shot of winning our district for the first time ever, so that’s a huge goal for us this year. We didn’t lose a lot of our starting lineup, and we gained two new freshman, so we are starting stronger than we did last year.”

Swimming
Last Year in Dual Meets: 7-5
State Qualifiers: none–missed cut for 400 free relay by 0.7 seconds

“Our main goal this year is to work hard at practice so everyone on the team can swim to his full potential,” says Hunter Sigmund ‘18. “We also plan to win lots of meets, bond as a team, and hopefully make it to State this year. Considering how small we are as a team, everyone needs to step up and swim their hardest this year.”

Hockey
Last Year: 6-12-1
Playoff Result: Second Round of State

“The hockey program is strongly rooted in tradition and I am excited to welcome all the new student-athletes to the experience,” says Coach Meridith Thorpe. “Based on what I have seen thus far with a week of preseason under our belts, things look promising. I encourage our team to stay in the moment. I try and do the same. We focus on the right here, right now. The demonstrated leadership that the upperclassmen have displayed has also been wonderful to watch.”

Did you know? The Bomber hockey program has won 11 Midwest Tournament Championships (the equivalent of a state championship)–the most of any program.

Tennis
Last Year: 19-1
Playoff Result: STATE CHAMPS

“We are a really young team, with only one senior and six incoming freshmen,” says Coach Wendy Sock, “We lost our number one player and state singles title holder from last season, Gaby Thornton [‘20], with a knee injury, but are well represented at the top with returning state singles runner up, Sami Remis [‘20].”

“The girls tennis team has had both an extremely strong team and an extremely strong season the past two years, and we have every reason to believe that this trend will continue into this year,” says Maddy Duncan ‘18. “As the last two years and two state titles have proven, it is impossible to be successful without a substantial amount of hard work and a mindset that we are always striving to improve. Hopefully this work will pay off and we can bring home a third state title this year!”

Soccer
Last Year: 20-4
Playoff Result: STATE CHAMPS

“Our team is in an interesting situation at the moment,” says Max Panagos ‘18. “Of course, we are coming off a tremendous season that finished with a win in the state title game, but we graduated nine seniors off the team as well. This being said, that will not affect what we hope to accomplish this season. With the young, yet experienced roster of guys we are carrying this season, we would love to again be a top four team in the state this year and for many years in the future.”

Did you know? Boys Soccer is currently the largest sport at Burroughs with over 60 kids placed on one of the four teams.

Football
Last Year: 4-7
Playoff Result: Second Round of Districts

“Our goal for the season is to work together as a team to win as many games as possible,” says Jake Bain ‘18. “We are a very close group of guys who are willing to put as much work in as it takes to win another state championship.”

Golf
Last Year in Dual Meets and Invitationals: 10-1
Playoff Result: Second in State

“Last year was a banner year for the Lady Bombers as the varsity claimed the second place trophy at the Class 1 State Championships,” says coach Tim Begley. “This season has started with much enthusiasm and optimism. All of the girls seem up to the challenges of working on both the mental and physical aspects of their golf games. In the early going, we are diligently focusing on putting and short game practice. For us to compete and have a nice run back to the state tournament–this is the area of the game that we will stress and work on to improve all season long. We possess more of a balanced team approach, stressing efficiency as a hallmark. The identity of our team is that we battle and compete as a team first–we take pride in working to make every shot count and minimizing the mistakes along the way. Every shot counts!”

Did you know? The team excels at driving on the range, but not at driving to their matches.

Cross Country
State Qualifiers and Finishes: Grace Gore (9) and Arianna Latuda (46); Brandon Miller (33) and Liam Donovan (102)

“The goal for the upcoming season for the boys cross country team is a team state berth,” says Sam Holmes ‘18. “We lost three of our top six runners from last year, but we are expecting a big season from our remaining three and we are excited for the new runners to step up in a big way. Arianna Latuda ‘18 adds, “I know the seniors are excited for a great last year! We’re all ready to work as a team and go as far as we can together through the season and post-season.”

“Our goals are to help every runner to improve upon their performances,” says Coach Christine Bugnitz. “Both teams of runners ran regularly this summer and are starting the season stronger than last year.
