The Fall Play: Front

The Fall Play: Front

The fall play this year, “Front,” explores the lives of the people left behind in England during the blitz. The play focuses on the women left behind and considers the daily struggles of families during WWII. It closely follows the life of Judith, a woman who has to take care of her children when her husband Frank goes to war and includes the stories of many other families greatly affected by the war.

Mr. Battles, who is directing the play this year, said that the play was different than many previous plays in an intriguing way. Battles said, “ the play was written in a way that always makes the audience aware that they are watching a play.” This effect can be caused by the careful double casting of specific characters. For example, Battles said, “ Judith’s husband, Frank also plays the boss of the factory that they work in where they make bombs.” Both of the characters are very contentious, and this allows the audience to connect the two characters together and remember that this is a play.

The play also is very relevant to things that are going on in the world right now. For one, it includes topics of war and terror and the grief that follows. It is also a play that focuses on women, and all the stories that didn’t get told.
