The traditional rivalry weekend with MICDS took place on Saturday, September 22 at MICDS, and, across all competing varsity sports, the Bombers traded wins and losses with our neighbors down the road. With additional information provided by Ben Remis, we have recapped all six of the varsity contests.

In the first game of the day, the Bomber boys’ soccer team walked away with a 3-1 win. Austin Isaak ‘20, with an assist from Jackson Miller ‘20, notched the first goal of the match to give Burroughs an early 1-0 lead. Burroughs continued to press in on its attack but entered halftime with only a one-goal advantage. Armando Sanchez-Conde ‘18 added to the lead after converting on a corner kick play, but MICDS answered to make the score 2-1 with a little over 20 minutes remaining. Looking to stretch their lead, John Gates ‘20 crossed it to Collin Bradley ‘19 for Burroughs’ third and final goal of the game. The Bombers improved their record to 12-1, while staying undefeated against Metro League opponents.

The defending Class 1 Bomber girls’ tennis team swept MICDS 9-0 to win their match. #1 Sami Remis ‘20, #2 Lily Walther ‘21, #3 Ainsley Heidbreder ‘21, #5 Kate Stengel ‘19, and #6 Sriya Bandi ‘20 won each of their matches in two games and prevented MICDS from winning more than two sets each time. #4 Maddy Duncan ‘18 came back to win her match in a tiebreaker after dropping the first set. Additionally, the Bombers prevailed in all three doubles flights. The tennis team concludes their regular with a 12-1 record and look to add their third-consecutive state championship, beginning with district play this weekend.

The boys’ swimming team suffered the first Burroughs loss. Swimming in MICDS’ beautiful new pool, the Bombers dropped the meet 98-78 but recorded several personal record times. Eddie Ko ‘18 won the 100 M Free and attained a personal record, and Hunter Sigmund ‘18 prevailed in 50 M and 100 M Free. Sigmund also narrowly missed on a state qualifying time. Though ultimately a loss, Burroughs and its swimmers had a successful meet.

The Bomber volleyball team defeated our rivals in straight sets 25-16, 25-19, extending its winning streak against MICDS after beating them for the first time in a decade last season. Michaela Bach ‘18 recorded eleven kills with Melanie Molen ‘18 assisting twenty-eight times. Bailey Hahn ‘19 and Ella Schachtman ‘19 both notched a pair of aces and Bach added another. Kristen Mason ‘18 (7 kills, 1 block) and Mia Meier ‘19 (5 kills, 2 blocks) proved pivotal for the Bombers as well. The volleyball team upped their record to 12-8 overall and 3-1 within the Metro League, the only loss coming to defending state champion Lutheran South.

The field hockey team dropped a tight contest to MICDS 1-0. While the majority of the game was played within the Burroughs defensive circle, the defense, led by goalkeeper Luanna Summer ‘18, held strong, and halftime came with a 0-0 score. Shortly into the second half, the Rams knocked in the deciding goal, but Summer ‘18 recorded 14 saves throughout the game. The Burroughs attack was stifled and unable to sustain a consistent challenge to the MICDS defense, failing to record a shot on goal. The Bomber hockey team moves to 7-4-1 with a month remaining in the season.

In the final competition, MICDS would emerge victorious against the Bomber football team in the first rivalry game played at O’Hara Field. The Rams shut out the Bombers and racked up 52 points en route to a win. The football team fell to 2-4 on the season and 1-3 in the Metro League.
